Fixing Toronto Community Housing Corporation

The last administration left a complete disaster at Toronto Community Housing.
We inherited a $700 million repair backlog that was growing by a staggering $100 million each year. And we did something about it.
We immediately sent in the Auditor General, to do a top to bottom review.
What the Auditor General uncovered shocked Toronto, it shook our faith in the country’s biggest landlord.
While our most vulnerable lived in horrible conditions, management held lavish parties and took resort getaways.
We found deep rooted problems and we immediately took action.
With the backing of City Council we replaced the CEO and Board of Directors.
We installed a new senior management team dedicated to restoring public faith in TCHC.
Toronto Community Housing Corporation has undergone a dramatic transformation.
We have put tighter controls on procurement and employee expenses. We have increased oversight and transparency.
These changes alone have led to $50 million in savings. And that means more money for repairing units.
For the first time ever, Toronto Community Housing now has a 10-year financial plan, and the City has committed over $800 Million to fund it.
This year alone, we are investing $128 million in repairs.
And next year we will do even better! In 2015 we will invest $175 million for repairs in 335 TCHC buildings!
If you live in TCHC, this is good news for you.
It means your broken fridge will get replaced. It means more security cameras and it means more money to fight bed bugs- it means the renewal of communities.
I talk to TCHC residents every day- and I am encouraged by what I am hearing.
I know that we have come a long way in 4 years. TCHC is turning the corner, things are getting better! But our TCHC stock is in desperate need of attention.
Repairing our TCHC housing units is my top priority. I will work with Council to tackle this issue head on.
I will lead a top to bottom review of TCHC operations to make sure taxpayers money is being invested wisely. I will put every penny we save straight to repairs.
I will make sure Toronto residents can take pride in TCHC.
